The Power of the Blood of Jesus

1 John 1:7 (NIV) The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

I.) Definition of blood and the Blood of Jesus:

Blood: Blood is the life-sustaining fluid that carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, removing waste and protecting against disease.

The Blood of Jesus: refers to the blood shed by Jesus during His crucifixion, representing the ultimate sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins and the basis for salvation and a New Covenant with God.

II.) Historical Biblical Overview of the Blood of Jesus:

1. Genesis – The First Blood Sacrifice

Genesis 3:21 (NLT) 21 And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.

2. The Passover – Blood as Protection

Exodus 12:7 (ESV) 7 Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.

Exodus 12:13 (ESV) 13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

1 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV) 7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

3. The Mosaic Law – Blood for Atonement

Leviticus 17:11 (NIV) 11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.

1. Why did the Lord use blood?

• Life is in the blood. 

Leviticus 17:11 (NIV) 11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.

Hebrews 9:22 (ESV) 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

• A divine exchange.

Romans 6:23 (ESV) 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2. What did the blood represent?

• Sacrifice.

Hebrews 9:12 (ESV) 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.

1. Daily Offerings: Numbers 28:3-4 – Every day, two lambs were sacrificed (one in the morning, one in the evening).

2. Sabbath Offerings: Numbers 28:9-10 – On the Sabbath, an additional two lambs were sacrificed.

3. Festival and Special Offerings: During major feasts like Passover, thousands of animals were sacrificed. 2 Chronicles 30:24 records 2,000 bulls and 17,000 sheep for one Passover. 1 Kings 8:63 describes Solomon offering 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep at the temple dedication.

4. Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur): Leviticus 16 – A bull and two goats were sacrificed for the nation’s sins.

• Covenant.

Luke 22:20 (ESV) 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

• Cleansing & Protection.

• Overcomes evil.

Revelation 12:11 (NKJV) 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…

• It satisfies divine justice. 

Romans 3:25-26 (NLT) 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

• It restores relationship.

Colossians 1:19-20 (NIV) 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

John 1:29 (NLT) 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Hebrews 10:10 (NLT) 10 For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.

III.) There is power in the Blood of Jesus:

1. The blood redeems us.

Ephesians 1:7 (NIV) In Him, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.

2. The blood cleanses us.
