GROWING UP
Discover Your Purpose

Week 1 SOUL TATTOO: You don’t grow up by being perfect, you grow up by Knowing God.

Week 2 SOUL TATTOO: We’re not just better together, we’re stronger together.

1 Corinthians 13:11 (NLT) 11 When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.

SOUL TATTOO: I don’t just “Discover My Purpose”, I grow into it.

Direction, not perfection. One next step at a time.

So many of us have a general sense of purpose, but very few have a biblical sense of purpose.

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Luke 5:1–5 (NIV) 1One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

Jesus meets Peter in the middle of his routine, not the middle of a revival.

Luke 5:6-10 (NIV) When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”

Luke 5:11 (NIV) 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Purpose begins when we follow, not when we fully understand.

Peter didn’t know he would:

  • Walk on water
  • Preach at Pentecost
  • Help build the early church

Direction, not perfection. One next step at a time.

SOUL TATTOO: I don’t just “Discover My Purpose”, I grow into it.

3 “GROWING UP” PURPOSE PRINCIPLES:

1.) Purpose is discovered, not decided.

We don’t just find our purpose, we grow into it.

Most people think purpose is something they decide one time:

  • One calling
  • One moment
  • One big reveal

Proverbs 16:9 (NIV) In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

God rarely shows us the full map, He gives us the next step.

God reveals purpose progressively, not instantly.

SOUL TATTOO: I don’t just “Discover My Purpose”, I grow into it.

2.) Purpose grows when we serve, not when we wait

Matthew 25:21 (NIV) 21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

God reveals more purpose through faithfulness, not passivity.

Purpose follows obedience, not observation.

Mature believers don’t wait to be used, they make themselves available.

SOUL TATTOO: I don’t just “Discover My Purpose”, I grow into it.

3.) Purpose is bigger than me, but it starts with me.

1 Corinthians 12:7 (NIV) Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

1 Corinthians 12:7 (NLT) A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

Our gifts were never meant to end with us.

Our purpose is personal, but it’s never just about us.

PURPOSE IN ACTION:

  • A willing heart.
  • An open hand.
  • And one next step.

We don’t grow up by finding our purpose, we grow up by walking in it.

Direction, not perfection. One next step at a time.

Peter didn’t grow into his purpose because he was perfect, he grew because he stayed in the direction Jesus was leading.
